Today is Martin Luther King Jr.-Day to honor and remember the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement.
"The Labor-Movement was the principal force that transformed misery and dispair into hope and progress"
The first idea of a holiday honoring the Civil Rights leader and the many accomplishments made in large part by his efforts, was promoted by Labor Unions in contract negotiations. The Holiday was signed into law in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan and observed for the first time on January 20th, 1986.
The philosophy and vision of Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil-rights movement parrallel those of organized labor and working people in general.
