  • Why politics matter
    Updated On: Sep 05, 2022

A strong and growing Labor Movement is the number one key element in building a strong vibrant economy and creating a better way of life for all citizens.

As union members we need to work every day to not only maintain what we have achieved through our union involvement, but work to continually grow our union to ensure our future and to improve our conditions and improve the lives of our members and all working families. Our involvement in the political process is directly connected to our ability to improve the lives of our members and their families. There are several ways we can work to create a brighter future and all of them are in some way influenced by politics through laws, rules and public policies.

From the fights and struggles of workers in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s to improve their working conditions leading up to the great expansion of unions with the enactment of the National Labor Relations Act the growth of the Labor Movement brought prosperity to workers and to business. The growth of unions created millions of new consumers to purchase goods and services. When workers organize and form unions they gain a seat at the table to discuss issues and to negotiate over working conditions with their employers. And when workers and employers sit down to address issues together it is far more likely that conditions are improved for workers while the needs and concerns of the employers are also addressed.

What some of America’s greats have to say about Unions……….

    • Dwight D. Eisenhower: Only a fool would try to deprive working men and women of the right to join the union of their choice
    • Martin Luther King Jr.: “The Labor Movement did not diminish the strength of the nation but enlarged it. By raising the living standards of millions, labor miraculously created a market for industry and lifted the whole nation to undreamed of levels of production. Those who attack labor forget these simple truths, but history remembers them
    • Abraham Lincoln: If any man tells you he loves America, yet hates labor, he is a liar. If any man tells you he trusts labor, yet fears labor, he is a fool
    • John F. Kennedy: The American Labor Movement has consistently demonstrated its devotion to the public interest. It is, and has been, good for all America
    • Franklin D. Roosevelt: It’s one of the characteristics of a free and democratic nation that it have free and independent labor unions

As IBEW members we took an Oath of Membership where we swore to uphold the founding principles of the IBEW in the pursuit of creating better working conditions on the job for all electrical workers and a better society as a whole.

Our rights to have unions and to collectively bargain with our employers are legal rights that can be taken away with the swipe of a pen by politicians who don’t believe in the value of unions and the need for a strong growing Middle-Class. That’s why it is more important than ever to protect workers’ rights and the growth of unions to create a better life for all.
